Mt. Makiling is a legendary mountain and one of the most,if not the most famous mountain in Luzon, inspiring many poets, writers and lyricists. It is a perfect place for hiking even for first timers since trails are considered easy up to moderate in scale. The place also has picnic grounds where you can camp and enjoy nature with your family even for non-hikers and physically challenged individuals since the area is accessible by road and vehicular transport. Mt. Makiling is actually an inactive volcano with three trails, the UPLB,the Arts Center trail leading to the Makiling Arts Center which is under the Cultural Center of the Philippines and houses the prestigious Makiling High School for the Arts for young gifted artists, and the Sto. Tomas trail. It has a "mud-spring" park with sulfuric vents, which are located near the picnic grounds. Makiling is the source of Los Baños' hot springs and has three peaks,of which the highest and most popular is the Second Peak.
How to get there:
From Manila take an hour and a half bus or private vehicle ride to Laguna Province. Makiling can be climbed all year round.
