The Bataan Peninsula lies in what is known as the East Asian-Australian Flyway. Its capital,Balanga City,is a popular stop-over for migratory birds, particularly the three barangays of Puerto Rivas,Tortugas and Sibacan. They are the top feeding grounds for resting gulls, terns, herons, egrets, and numerous other species. Puerto Rivas and Tortugas share a wide expanse of coastal plain that becomes filled with thousands of migratory birds during low tide. Sibacan has a combination of grasslands, fishponds and wetlands that are ideal habitats for various species of migratory and resident birds.
The best time for visiting is from September to March. Local residents are undergoing training to become bird watching guides, although Manila-based guides can be provided for by tour operators offering birdwatching programs.
Getting there:
Balanga City is located 124 km from Manila and can be reached via either the National Road or the Roman Superhighway.
