Point of Interest

Subic Bay Freeport Zone   (Subic, Zambales, Luzon)

This former American Naval Base sits on a huge swathe of protected lowland forest area and is home to a large number of bird species. It is not unusual to see on a single day raptors, parrots, coucals, malkohas and hornbills. Although the entire complex is a good birding site (birds can also be seen from along the roadsides and forest edges),there are at least three areas in Subic that have the highest concentration of bird species. These are Hill 394,Nabasan Area, and Triboa. The Nabasan Area would give and opportunity to view various species of pigeons, coucals and woodpeckers. Hill 394 is home to malkohas hornbills, falconets and other raptors. Triboa has both forest and water birds as its showcase for birdwatchers. Another site is the Bee Eater colony, which is an interesting birding site from February to May.

Getting there:

Subic Bay Freeport is located about 80 km from Manila, and can be reached via the Northern Luzon Expressway (NLEX) and the Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway (SCTEX)
