The Philippine Cockatoo used to be fairly common in most parts of the country. Habitat degradation and the uncontrolled pet trade have reduced its population to a few islands, including Palawan. However,in 1998,the local governement of Narra and the Katala Foundation embarked on a significant program designed to save the remaining cockatoos. The best time of the year for birdwatching is during the summer months (February to May),when the sea is calmest to be near the cockatoo's roosting area. Otherwise, all other species can be viewed year-round,though the best time to view other species in Rasa Islands is during the high tide. Smaller boats will ferry birdwatchers through the mangroves to reach the watchtower where hordes of other species can be seen flying or feeding amidst the mangrove forest. Accordingly, the best hours to visit the roosting site is during the Dawn Tour from 4:30 A.M. – 7:00 A.M.,or the Dusk Tour from 4:30 P.M. – 7:00 P.M. Local guides trained by the Katala Foundation are available in Narra. Other guides based in Puerto Princesa can also be hired. Standard fees include: Conservation Fee: Php 140Guide's Fee: Php 250Boat Fees: depends on boat size and number of persons. Getting There:Located south of Puerto Princesa City, the municipality of Narra can be reached by commuter jeepney or rented van after a 1.5-2 hour drive. Visitors must proceed first to the office of the Katala Foundation and obtain the necessary permit. Then proceed to the town port for a 20-minute boatride to Rasa Island. Depending on the tide level and the timing of the trip, one can either go inland up to the watchtower or just stay near the roosting area of the Philippine Cockatoos (a further 15 minute boat ride beyond the landing site for the watchtower).
