In the municipality of Bacnotan, which is widely popular for its cement deposits and Sea Urchins, lies Barangay Carcarmay, named after a yellowish sweet-sour fruit-bearing tree. But this quaint barangay is not know for the Carcarmay Trees, which grow in abundance, but for the century old Acacia tree which stands majestically at the center of Carcarmay Community School. The tree was once a source of shade for Japanese soldiers of World War II stationed in the area.
Thanks to the responsible residents, teachers, students and local officials, the Centennial Tree of Bacnotan continues to enjoy protection and proper care, ensuring more years of harmonious existence with its environment. Like the historic Baluarte Watch Tower of Luna,La Union, which saw the flights of its illustrious sons and daughters to greatness, the Centennial Tree will also continue to witness the unselfish efforts of Bacnotan's people for progress and peace.
