Amburayan River separates several towns in La Union and Ilocos Sur. It also serves as an additional source of income for the people of Sudipen. The river also figures in the Ilokano's pre-Hispanic Epic "Biag ni Lam-ang",the extraordinary tale of a young man's adventures in love and loss. It was said that he once took a dip in the Amburayan River, after avenging the murder of his father, and all the dirt from his body caused the fish in the river to die. The poem portrays the earlier customs, tradition, culture and beliefs of the Ilocanos as well as representing their qualities; adventurous, brave and hardy. Recited and originally written in the Ilokano language, the epic is said to have been written by several poets from various generations, and was first preserved in writing around 1640,by a blind Ilokano bard named Pedro Bucaneg.
