The Philippine Reef and Rainforest Conservation Foundation Inc. (PRRCFI) is a non-stock,non-profit organization, whose mission is to ensure the long-term conservation of the marine and terrestrial environment in the Philippines through education and poverty alleviation. It's first project was to manage and operate an international fund raising effort to purchase Danjugan Island,a 43 hectare uninhabited island in Brgy. Bulata,Cauayan,Negros Occidental. It has since then developed the island as a marine reserve and sanctuary. In 2001,PRRCFI received the Best Managed Reef Award in protecting the exceptionally-rich coral reefs that surrounds Danjugan Island. Danjugan Island lies in the Sulu Sea,3km west of Negros Occidental. It is home to a variety of wildlife species, including sea eagles, rare pigeons and doves, threatened Tabon scrubfowls and coconut crabs and fruit and insect bats. There are five lagoons in the area: three inland and two open with coral and reef fish species. It is also fringed with turtle-nesting beaches and surrounded by diverse coral reefs.
Activities on the island include:
-
Skin and scuba diving
-
Kayaking
-
Bird Watching
-
Guided Forest Treks
A visit to the island also provides an excellent opportunity to interact with members of the local community from the mainland. PRRCFI aims to provide community-based alternative livelihood opportunities in nature-tourism. Already, there are 6 dive guides (out of the 30 or so residents of Brgy. Bulata trained in scuba diving and marine science) who can be depended immediately. In addition, training was given to 10 locals who can serve as nature guides on the island.
