In the 1960's,a nationwide reforestation program made the planting of thousands of mahogany seedlings in this area possible. This forest,now a two-kilometer stretch of full-grown mahogany trees,can be seen along the road as you travel to chocolate hills.

This forest is protected by the Elders of Balbalasang,who among the Kalinga tribes,have the final say in tribal matters. In the 1970's and 1980's a paper plant was to be put up by Cellophil Resources Corporation,a move that was strongly and successfully opposed by the people of Balbalasang some of whom were employees of the company.
