On December 8,1941 the Japanese attacked the Philippines only 10 hours after their attack on Pearl Harbor destroying most of the American aircraft on the ground and signifying the inclusion in of the country into the war . After desperate attempts to defend the country,General Douglas MacArthur declared Manila an open city on December 25,1941 and withdrew his troops to Corregidor Island together with President Quezon and Vice President Osmena who eventually transferred to the United States to declare a government in exile. On March 11,1942 General MacArthur finally submitted Corregidor to the Japanese and escaped to Australia to regroup and plan his return. On April 9,1942 the remaining American and Filipino troops stationed in Bataan surrendered to the Japanese and on May 6,1942 the survivors on Corregidor gave in.The Philippines was under Japan for three years and on October 20,1944 General MacArthur fulfilled a promise he made when he left Corregidor and landed on the shores of the island of Leyte in the Visayas Islands. On January 9,1945 the Allied Troops landed at Lingayen Gulf in Luzon. After bitter fighting and fierce resistance the Japanese formally surrendered on September 2,1945 on board the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay.You may plan your own tour of the World War 2 monuments,many of which are in or near major urban centers in the Luzon and Visayas Islands.

It has a total inside area of 2,025 sq. meters. The walls are 20 feet high,8 feet thick and the towers are 30 feet high from the ground level.

Cotabato City
    Takumi Butai Memorial Shrine   (Cotabato City, Cotabato City, Mindanao) In World War II,Takumi Butai was the Provinicial Commander of the Japanese Forces assigned to Cotabato City. His wish,that some of his ashes be buried in Cotabato,was honored; years later a shrine commissioned by the Cotabato government and the Lion's Club of Kyoto was erected,memorializing Butai and the many deceased Japanese Soldiers.
